Come join RefreshMiami at a new venue, the beautiful Mutiny Hotel in Coconut Grove.
Our topic this month will be the realtime web and how it is changing online services, marketing, and search engine optimization:
“The real-time web is a set of technologies and practices which enable users to receive information as soon as it is published by its authors, rather than requiring that they or their software check a source periodically for updates. The most successful examples are Facebook’s newsfeed and Twitter.” Wikipedia
John Carcutt will lead a discussion on how search engines and vertical search is changing due to real time factors. For instance, how will the combination of Twitter and Bit.ly change your organic search results? Learn about “QDF,”" the obscure but real time factor of the Google algorithm. We’ll discuss the two basic types of RealTime Search: “timeliness” and “location.”" Real Time search will not impact all verticals the same and we’ll look at a few examples.
Matt Heitzenroder is a cofounder of Appush, a startup focused on providing a feature-rich messaging platform for internet-scale applications that developers can capitalize on. Appush’s initial product release gives developers a simple way to send Push Notifications on the iPhone. Matt has spent the last 10 years participating in various software startups, most recently and notably, SugarCRM based in the Silicon Valley. When he’s not geeking-out over building hyper-scalable, high-quality software, he’s probably sleeping, drinking beer, sailing, or scuba-diving. At our meetup, Matt will be discussing the process and tools Appush used to create solid software. In addition, if you are looking to add Push Notifications to an iPhone app, this is your chance to get an exclusive invite to the Appush free private beta.

September Refresh Agenda
This month’s we’ll be answering three questions: I’ve got an idea, now what? I’ve got a company, who can fund it? I’m up and running, now what? We have 2 great attorneys from Gunster who will be giving us some basic answers to those questions & from Worsterer.com we’ve got the founders talking about their new business and the things they are learning along the way.
Yes, this discussion could take months, but in the hour or so that we have, we will give you a broad overview of legal items to keep in mind when you begin ask yourself those questions. To get you started, we’ll discuss forming an entity, getting funded, working with angel investors and venture capital (and what they look for in a start up), ownership, compensation and equity incentives, your business name, and much more. We’ll also discuss important things to keep in mind once you’re up and running, such as protection of intellectual property and confidential information, employee matters, licensing agreements, end-user agreements, privacy issues, terms and conditions of use, user generated content issues, and sending and responding to cease and desist letters.
Presenters:
Gaida Zirkelbach, is an attorney within the Technology and Entrepreneurial Services Practice Group of Gunster, Florida’s Law Firm for Business. Gaida provides strategic counseling and negotiates transactions in the areas of technology, Internet, interactive marketing, mergers and acquisitions, and privacy and security. She advises large companies and start-ups and has vast experience in negotiating deals with technology and Internet industry leaders, including the largest online media properties and Fortune 500 companies.
Nicholas Robbins, a shareholder in the corporate and technologies practice groups at the law firm Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, works closely with entrepreneurs and investors with the financing, building and selling of business enterprises. He began his legal career at the Boston-based law firm of Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, a global leader in venture capital and technology and Internet law. He was recently highlighted by Palm Beach Post as “the attorney to go to for venture capital, merger and acquisitions, as wells as corporate and strategic guidance for South Florida technology, Internet and emerging growth companies.”
