1 CIC impact report is out – what does it say?
CIC Miami, which launched in 2016, was Cambridge Innovation Center’s second expansion site outside of Massachusetts. Now the 80,000 square foot center houses 250-plus small businesses, startups and nonprofits, with 34% of them in tech; 27% in social impact (including education, NGO, policy, and energy); and 25% in life sciences, CIC Miami said in its first two-year “Launch + Growth” Impact Report.
Other findings of the report:
- Between 2016 and 2018, client companies have raised $162.6M+ in funds and generated 900+ local and global jobs. 82% hired within the last two years.
- The CIC Miami client base is 28% are female-founded, 37& are minority-founded, and 27% are immigrant-founded.
- Of the CIC Miami client base, 35% of clients expanded their businesses to Miami from around the globe, and 47% of clients conduct business in and outside the U.S.
- CIC launched an International Softlanding Program to help companies to help foreign companies seeking to scale establish a presence in the U.S, Since the program’s launch, over 150 startups, governments, investors and venture capitalists have received support for expansion and exploration of the U.S. market.
- CIC opened South Florida’s first and only shared wet laboratory, CIC’s Converge Labs, providing access to affordable laboratory facilities, in partnership with the University of Miami.
- Venture Café Miami, CIC Miami’s sister non-profit organization, welcomed over 30,000 people since 2016 at its weekly #ThursdayGathering.

2 Neoris opening “Augmented Intelligence” practice in Miami
Neoris, a global tech transformation consultancy, is launching an “Augmented Intelligence” practice in Miami, and has named Miami technology entrepreneur Demian Bellumio to head it up. Bellumio said it will be the cornerstone of the company’s new strategy as it accelerates its push into the US and offers next generation AI/Knowledge Graph solutions globally.
“I think it’s very exciting for Miami as I will be able to contribute my 10 + years of focus on this space to a 5,000+ person organization that is headquartered in Miami, but until now it didn’t do much in the U.S. We have presence across Latin America, Europe and India. We are building an amazing new office in the heart of Brickell, which will have an Innovation Lab showcasing many cool partners and we’ll seek to partner with many local enterprises to co-innovate around graph and AI use cases,” said Bellumio.

3 General Assembly looking for a city leader – for Miami
It’s been rumored that General Assembly, the digital training giant, has been interested in the Miami market for several years but soured on the area at least temporarily after coming close to selecting a location a couple of years ago. Now the romance is on again, and much more serious: It is seeking a City Lead in Miami to oversee operations.
The City Lead will be GA’s on-the-ground leader who will be responsible for “building and managing day-to-day operations” and “developing strategic partnerships, including a robust employer network for our graduates,” according to the job description. The person should be a “master networker” and — o surprise here — “fluency in Spanish preferred.”
The New York City-based company, which offers classes in coding, design and other digital skills at dozens of campuses around the world as well as online, has also been scouting locations. Stay tuned.
4 Ultimate Software is millennials’ ‘best place to work’ -again
For the third year in a row, Ultimate Software topped Fortune’s ‘best workplace for millennials’ list, with 98% percent of the Weston-based company’s millennial employees saying they are experiencing a great place to work.
Is it the leadership or is it the perks? Perhaps both for the large South Florida tech employer that went private in April. Benefits include 100 percent paid health insurance and generous time off policies, as well as more unusual perks for South Florida, such as coverage of in-vitro fertilization treatments for women, gender reassignment coverage, and adoption financial assistance.
