July 17, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 8:00 pm

One day hackathon to unite our technology community to fight racism.

About this Event

Unite & Fight Hackathon

WHAT:

This is not your average hackathon! One day virtual hackathon to unite our technology community to fight racism. Our Unite & Fight Hackathon will center on using technology to design and build applications that provide education, resources, and training to combat racism.

We want to spark ideas and solutions but we want to support ongoing work. This hackathon will be continued by a regular weekly meetup and will culminate in the judges’ presentations in September 2020.

Get ready to put #WordsIntoAction!

WHEN:

Tuesday, July 7th and Tuesday, July 14th from 6:30pm – 7:30pm Wyncode Academy will host pre-Hackathon information sessions via zoom.

These sessions will cover the schedule, relevant information, and allow for all participants to ask any questions they have before we kick-off the event.

(If you attend the first Info Session you do not have to attend the second one).

Thursday, July 16th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm Lighting talks will take place via zoom.

These lighting talks will feature Black leaders from our community as well as those seeking to share their experience of what it means to be Black. This experience share will serve as insight into the problems that hackathon participants will seek to solve the following day.

Friday, July 17th from 8:00am – 8:00pm the hackathon will take place via zoom.

July to November 2020 Wyncode will host a regular meetup to bring hackathon participants together to continue work on the applications.

September 2020 completed projects will be presented to a panel of judges both technical experts and community leaders. The applications will be judged on technical, product design, and the value of the solution that was built. The winner of this judging will go on to meet with Mayor Suarez and present their work on stage at the eMerge Americas conference in November.

HOW:

The hackathon will take place on zoom with breakout rooms set up for the teams. There will be a few predefined projects such as Rate My Officer, finding local protests, or identifying resources to be educated on racism. Teams may also create a project of their own choosing with an actively anti-racist mission.

Register as a team. Teams can be made up of up to 5ppl (minimum of 2ppl). Teams can be strictly developers or product designers or a mix. If you are an individual without a team go ahead and register. You will be added to the hackathon Slack group in which you can recruit or request to join teams.

Hackathon will go from 8am to 8pm. Building from 8am to 6pm and presentations from 6-8pm.

We will celebrate the solutions and each group will present. There will be no official winner as the goal is to start doing important work.

Following the hackathon Wyncode will sponsor a weekly meetup to continue work on the projects which emerge from the hackathon. In September 2020 those projects which have been completed and implemented will have the opportunity to present to a panel of judges. The winner will meet with Mayor Suarez and present on stage at the eMerge Americas Conference in November.
